For all those engineers who are involved in MEMS devices manifacturing and design, CAE tools can significantly increase the productivity and performance of every project developed.
Virtual simulations can help in understanding design failures or lack in performance by reproducing the working environment of any MEMS device zooming or slowing down the time, while modern optimization tools can help in finding what are the optimal design parameters in order to maximize the performance of the device.
XC Engineering proposes two different tools that can be used at this stage: FLOW-3D and IOSO.
FLOW-3D is a fluid-dynamic simulation tool that makes able to reproduce virtually the working condition of any MEMS technology, even very complex, and display as output the fluid dynamics, velocity field, temperature/electric field. This in a fully 3D multi-physical environment.
Users can easily import their geometries, and the mashing phase is greatly reduced trough the use of the FAVORTM algorithm. The FAVOR is an immersive boundary approach, where the mesh is quickly drawn by creating boxes around complex shapes. No need to follow the contour of the solid obstacle, to mesh it.
The approach is through a time-marching technique, that allows high accuracy and computational speed especially when solving transient problems.
A simple collection of physical phenomena that can be reproduced is:
• electrophoresis
• dielectrophoresis
• Joule-heating
• capillary flows
• electro-wetting
• lab-on-chip
• electric properties
In output, users can have information like:
• pressure and velocity value in every cell location at every time-frame
• temperature field
• gas bubble formation or entrainment
• particle dynamics
• streamlines seeding
• vorticity and stagnation zones
• electric properties
Particulary rich is the multi-physics contained in the software, where the user can couple any of the previous process with additional physics like: phase change, particle dynamics or moving/deformable components.
Nowadays, to get into the market with the highest quality level product as possible, it is often used to perform an optimization study of the own MEMS device.
To search for very extremum performance in a very quick way, XC Engineering suggests to try the software IOSO Technology (by SigmaTechnology).
IOSO will work in loop with your actual modeling tools, no needs of buying other simulation tools, using a new optimization "push-button" technology, that adopt a Self-Organization Strategy making use of up to 7 different well-known optimization methods (gradients, genetic, neural network, search region,...) simultaneously, and adapting every convergence parameter runtime.
