The forecast of the operating conditions of a spillway or a dam is one of the industrial sectors where the tools used by XC Engineering give their best.
The bibliography in this field is large, and XC Engineering works daily with high-level industrial entities providing its CFD experience on these topics.
One of the key strengths of the tool used by the society (FLOW-3D) is the accuracy in free-surface shape reproduction and the possibility to enrich the calculation with moving elements, like gates simulating the opening or closing transients.
SPILLWAY
The numerical simulation with FLOW-3D allows to preview the discharge coefficient of a spillway as well as other typical interesting quantities as the hydraulic energy, dissipation, or air entrainment. It is possible to analyse standard spillway shapes or innovative and complex ones like those designed inside major European Research Centres.
The modelling can be done in 2D (for very fast analysis) or in 3D, for a more accurate study on the environmental impact of the structure in its real operating condition.
DAMS
The CFD application on dam design covers almost every single actor involved in it. It is possible to simulate the efficiency of a water intake in its specific working topography, evaluate the generated external field, stagnation or recirculation zones, and verify its environmental impact. Similar outputs for outflow ducts or internal details.
