Numerical simulations are of great help during the evaluation on the environmental impact of civil structures like pier bridges or weirs.
In fact, only a CFD approach is able to provide a global and, at the same time, punctual information about the velocity field that is going to be generated by the structure, virtually, and in this way design effective fish passages and not oversized.
Thanks to the software used by XC Engineering (FLOW-3D) it becomes possible to get a detailed forecast of the water speed and turbulence field in the fluid flow, or the oxygenation level to grant the survival of the fish using a really “ecological” approach.
